Via Creativa Showcases Talents!

Our 4th Annual Via Creativa Night proved to be a huge success!  This past week, talented Eagles delighted the audience throughout the evening at the St. Joseph Fine Arts Center.  Guests were welcomed into the Visual Arts Gallery with individually selected pieces students created throughout the year.   Once the performances began students proudly showcased their musical talents in singing, percussion instruments, piano, band, and strings.  Performances in dance, improvisation, and karate also delighted the crowds.  Congratulations to all of the Eagles who participated in the Via Creativa programs, the instructors, and Mrs. Glorioso who coordinates the Via Creativa program!

adventOnce again our students are exercising their vocal chords in preparation for our Advent Program, “Sounds of the Season!”  We are blessed to take advantage of the St. Joseph Fine Arts Building for this concert!  Our program will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 21st.  Upon arrival, please make sure to park in designated parking spaces only.  We will dismiss ALL STUDENTS from the Fine Arts Center immediately following the program (ACE is not available on this day).  Please be sure to see your child’s teacher prior to leaving in order to sign for dismissal.  We hope that you enjoy the program and have a blessed Advent Season!

Scholastic Book Fair Scores Big!

St. Anthony Catholic School students, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins came out to shop the annual Scholastic Reading Book Fair. Thanks to the generosity of the STA community, we sold $12,213.59 worth of books in just four days!  We could not have been successful without the gallant effort of our All-Stars of the book fair, Mrs. Vicki Moorehead, Librarian, and Mrs. Elise Jones, Business Manager.  Also, thank you to the MANY volunteers that helped each day.  St. Anthony students are “champions” when it comes to reading!

Rainforest Animals Visit

Butterfly

Anna Maloney shows us the brilliant colors of the many butterflies found in the rainforest.

Second grade students ended their year strong with their most exciting unit of all… THE RAINFOREST!  Students compared life cycles of plants and animals specific to this ecosystem, studied the interdependance of these plants and animals, and learned to distinguish how our own actions or events related to the Earth’s environment may be harmful or hurtful.  The students transformed their hallways and the gymnasium portraying all the layers of the rainforest including each plant and animal found.  On May 16th these animal friends came to “visit” St. Anthony Catholic School to learn about our environment and teach the Eagles about their home!  The animals rapped and danced and taught us all more than we could ever want to know about their home and how to protect the planet Earth.

Students Take Learning on the Road

Friends

Fifth grade students partnered with their First grade buddies for a fun-filled day of exploration. Both groups had been studying rocks and minerals and taking care of our Earth. The day began where they saw the entire process of recycling and then explored the trails of petrified wood deposited over 38 million years ago. Students ended the day by rock fluming and finding lots of treasures to bring home.

Last Thursday many St. Anthony students ventured out to learn off campus!  All students in grades 1st – 6th headed outside the walls of this beautiful school taking various field trips including beyond the city limits to Vicksburg and even to New Orleans!  Our students reviewed their African & Rainforest unit by enjoying a private showing of Disney Nature’s Chimpanzee; became environmentalists at the MS Petrified Forest & Canton Recycling Center; got up close & personal with our state’s wonderful history at Vicksburg’s museums; and explored every habitat known to animals at the Audubon Institute & Aquarium of the America’s.  Students, teachers, and parents enjoyed putting their learning in action throughout our great land!

First Grade Math is Personal

St. Anthony Catholic School first grade students are continuing their unit on growth and life cycles.  Now that they have raised silkworms and hatched chicks, these students are learning about how much they have grown in such a short period of time!  Each student created a ”rice baby” signifying their exact length and weight when they were born as they study a unit on measurement. These students have been busy comparing and contrasting their findings from when they were born until now!  The learning continues as students compare other personal features that make each child unique.  The unit will conclude as each “baby” is baptized.  This sacrament is part of a very special unit for first grade within their religion curriculum.

Pictured are (left to right) Kate Temple, Mary Kathryn Sheehan, first grade teacher Ashley Hemleben and Avery Temple as they accurately measure their exact weight and length to make their own "rice baby."

Third Grade Shows Us the Money

Students in Mrs. Benson’s class get fired up about their economic project. Third grade students prepared for weeks to design and produce their own products to sell in their Third Grade Money Market last week. Students worked in groups that had to not only provide products that filled the wants of our second & fourth grade students but they also had to create needs. These other students had to determine and use the money they earned in class to purchase various wants and needs to meet standards in their curriculum. Third grade then determined profit margins, income and expenses, product demand, and discussed many various economic strategies. The students will use the money to give to a charity that the students choose based on what “company team” had the greatest profit margin. This company is banking on meeting the wants and needs of its consumer to be on top with their profit margin at the end of the Money Market.
